If racing can't maintain itself, then it should be allowed to die a natural death. Greyhound racing in particular is a cruel, deadly sport for the dogs and not worth tax dollars to prop up. If people want to gamble, there are plenty of human competitions they can waste their money on.

This school, as others, has a duty to protect students from harm -- including the physical and emotional harm that obviously results from being beaten by a teacher. The school breached it's duty to protect Isaiah. As a litigation consultant to attorneys on such cases I review the hiring practices of the school and whether the school breached the standard in the field with regard to their process. Did the school conduct an appropriate screening and interview process? Next, I look at the supervision of the teacher. Was she adequately trained to practice effective discipline? Was she observed in the classroom and provided adequate supervision from a principal or other supervisor? If there were any prior instances of her bullying, or worse, beating other students, why did the school retainer her? We usually think of bullying in schools between students. But this is a reminder that those we trust most with our kids can sometimes do the most harm.

When you use the phrase "labor shortage" or "skills shortage" you're speaking in a sentence fragment. What you actually mean to say is: "There is a labor shortage at the salary level I'm willing to pay." That statement is the correct phrase; the complete sentence and the intellectually honest statement.

Some people speak about shortages as though they represent some absolute, readily identifiable lack of desirable services. Price is rarely accorded its proper importance in their discussion.

If you start raising wages and improving working conditions, and continue doing so, you'll solve your shortage and will have people lining up around the block to work for you even if you need to have huge piles of steaming manure hand-scooped on a blazing summer afternoon.

And if you think there's going to be a shortage caused by employees retiring out of the workforce: Guess again: With the majority of retirement accounts down about 50% or more, most people entering retirement age are working well into their sunset years. So, you won’t be getting a worker shortage anytime soon due to retirees exiting the workforce.

Some specialized jobs require training and/or certification, again, the solution is higher wages and improved benefits. People will self-fund their re-education so that they can enter the industry in a work-ready state. The attractive wages, working conditions and career prospects of technology during the 1980’s and 1990’s was a prime example of people’s willingness to self-fund their own career re-education.

There is never enough of any good or service to satisfy all wants or desires. A buyer, or employer, must give up something to get something. They must pay the market price and forego whatever else he could have for the same price. The forces of supply and demand determine these prices -- and the price of a skilled workman is no exception. The buyer can take it or leave it. However, those who choose to leave it (because of lack of funds or personal preference) must not cry shortage. The good is available at the market price. All goods and services are scarce, but scarcity and shortages are by no means synonymous. Scarcity is a regrettable and unavoidable fact.

Shortages are purely a function of price. The only way in which a shortage has existed, or ever will exist, is in cases where the "going price" has been held below the market-clearing price.

Why yes, yes I would consider doing the music of Alex North! I only have excerpts from his scores and not much in the way of complete soundtracks however. Strangely enough, I may even have a copy of his score for 2001 which Kubrick didn't use. Anyway, feel free to call me at the station during business hours:

I have been a LP&L customer since '05, and immediately set up my account for autodraft (as I have done for my other accounts). As is true for many, I recently encountered financial strain, and recognized I would not have the requisite funds to cover all of my autodraft payments for November. Therefore, I took additional steps to register the account online, so that I could pay via an alternative method (credit card) for a zero balance and avoid the autodraft. (With a zero balance on my account, none of my other my autodraft creditors continue with the autodraft, and I had nothing in my paperwork with LP&L to indicate they operated differently.) I paid my LP&L bill early (Nov. 20) and received confirmation that the payment was applied that same day. LP&L still drafted the same funds ($140.80) from my checking account. Because of an alert from my bank, I noticed the problem and immediately contacted LP&L (as well as my financial institution) and explained my financial situation (that I paid early b/c I needed the funds in my checking account and that I was on a lean budget), and further requested they reverse the draft immediately. They stated they had old equipment and that (despite the confirmation) I should have called. They refused to reverse the autodraft and stated I could pick up a refund check or they could mail it. I explained that this was not a sufficient resolution to my problem, that I would not pick up the check, and I (again) demanded they reverse the charge. (I couldn't pick up the check b/c had a very important meeting scheduled that day and I didn't know how long the meeting would last; this was also the day b4 Thanksgiving). When I asked whether they "couldn't" or simply were refusing to reverse the autodraft, they replied that they were "just not going to do it". I was left with a migraine h/a for the next 2 days.

This 28 minute conversation w/LP&L occurred last Wednesday; it is now a week later and I still have not received "the check." As a result, I had insufficient funds when my mortgage payment attempted to draft yesterday. With NSF fees depleting my account further, I don't need to tell you what a domino effect this will have on my other bills (and my Christmas holidays).

Is it too much to ask LP&L to issue a refund immediately, cover all the fees associated with this overdraft, and issue a written apology? I am tempted to switch to Excel - oh, I almost forgot...I guess I will have to relocate instead.

Just another [un]satisfied LP&L customer...
