Yao, Artest lead Rockets past Mavericks
DALLAS (AP) – Yao Ming and Ron Artest powered a 16-2 run late in the fourth quarter, carrying the Houston Rockets to a 112-102 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the debut of new Mavs coach Rick Carlisle.
Yao finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Artest scored 29 points. He had seven points in the decisive run, which began with the game tied at 92. Along the way, he also showed his allegiance to his new big man.
After Yao was fouled hard and caught a late elbow from Dallas’ Josh Howard, Artest rushed between Yao and Howard. Officials quickly got involved, then decided to give Artest a technical foul.
Yao then showed his allegiance by telling an official, “He was trying to separate us.” The new teammates walked away slapping hands.
Cowboys owner: ‘Our best chance’ is Johnson at QB
DALLAS (AP) – Jerry Jones says having Brad Johnson at starting quarterback is the Dallas Cowboys’ best chance Sunday against the New York Giants.
Johnson is 1-1 since Tony Romo broke the pinkie on his throwing hand.
The 40-year-old threw three interceptions in the loss and passed for only 122 yards in the win, prompting speculation that third-stringer Brooks Bollinger may go in at the first sign that Johnson is struggling.
Jones says he doesn’t see that and that he believes Johnson can make decisions and make the throws to win the game.
Johnson’s experience is a big plus, but the Cowboys (5-3) may need Bollinger’s better mobility and stronger arm against the division-leading Giants (6-1).
However, Bollinger has only been around since Week 2 and has hardly thrown to the first-team receivers.
Jones said he’s confident coach Wade Phillips and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett know if and when to make a change.
NBA sets 2010 All-Star Game at new Cowboys stadium
DALLAS (AP) – NBA Commissioner David Stern says the Dallas Cowboys new stadium in Arlington will be the venue for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game.
Stern announced the plans yesterday in a ceremony outside the American Airlines Center near downtown Dallas, where the Dallas Mavericks play.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also attended the ceremony.
The game will be played at the stadium on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.
The all-rookie game and Saturday night festivities will take place the day and night before at the American Airlines Center.
This will be the first time that the league’s All-Star competitions have been split between two venues since 1989, when the game was played at the Astrodome and other events went on at the Summit.
Dallas last hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1986, when it was played at Reunion Arena.
