Wayne Havens, Superintendent of the Lubbock Independent School District, will announce his retirement intentions this morning, according to News Radio 1420.

Although no exact date has been set, Havens is expected to remain with the district through December of 2009 unless his replacement can be found sooner.

In his early days with the district in the 1970s, Havens was a coach at Thompson and Smylie Wilson junior high schools.  He became superintendent in 2003 during a time of controversy.

Havens replaced Dr Curtis Culwell, who was part of the Mike Moses administration.

He was asked by School Board members to take over as superintendent specifically to bring strength and stability to the district, and by all accounts he has succeeded.

(Edited to add:  Mr. Havens was an assistant principal at Coronado High School when I attended in the mid-1980s.  And no, I never had to go to his office….  -Derrick Ginter)
